A new year brings a new tax season. For many of us, that means a quick visit with an accountant or a few late nights trying to make sense of tax forms and credits. But for many working families in our community, tax refunds are the last thing on their mind. They are focused on putting the next meal on the table and keeping up with this month’s rent.

Imagine if those same families could easily receive the tax benefits they have earned. Every year, low to moderate income families in our area leave federal dollars unclaimed simply because they do not know about the VITA program, are unsure if they qualify, or feel overwhelmed by the entire tax preparation process.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, helps change that. VITA mobilizes and trains local volunteers to provide free, high quality tax preparation for working individuals and families. This service saves taxpayers the cost of paid tax preparation and helps them claim every tax credit for which they are eligible.

If you generally make less than seventy thousand dollars per year, we encourage you to take advantage of this free service and keep more of your hard earned money in your pocket.
